Spot the Pattern Behind Your Child’s Behaviour
Get the free Behaviour Pattern Tracker
When a behaviour keeps happening, it can be difficult to know what is triggering it, what your child may be trying to achieve, or why some responses seem to make things bette r- or worse.
The free Behaviour Pattern Tracker helps you slow the situation down and record what happens:
- just before the behaviour
- during the behaviour
- immediately afterwards
- when the behaviour is more or less likely to happen
Over 5 days, this can help you notice patterns that are easy to miss in the moment.
What the tracker can help you understand
Use the tracker to explore questions such as:
- Does the behaviour happen more often during particular routines?
- Are there common triggers or warning signs?
- What usually changes after the behaviour happens?
- Are certain responses unintentionally keeping the pattern going?
- When does your child cope more successfully?
The aim is not to blame you or your child. It is to help you understand the situation more clearly, so your next steps can become more thoughtful and less reactive.
What you’ll receive
Enter your details below and I’ll send you:
- the Behaviour Pattern Tracker
- simple instructions for completing it
- guidance to help you interpret what you record
- occasional evidence-informed emails about understanding and responding to behaviour
Start with one behaviour
Choose one behaviour that is currently difficult for your family.
For example:
- hitting or kicking
- screaming
- refusing everyday requests
- running off
- breaking things
- difficulties around bedtime
- conflict between siblings
You do not need to track everything. Focusing on one clear behaviour usually makes the pattern easier to see.
What happens after you sign up?
The tracker will be sent to the email address you provide.
You can then use it for several days to record what is happening around the behaviour. You will also receive guidance to help you think through the patterns you notice.
For some families, the tracker is enough to provide useful clarity. Others may decide they would benefit from more structured professional support.
Need help making sense of the pattern?
The Behaviour Pattern Mapping System™ is a structured, parent-facing assessment and coaching pathway.
It is designed to help families move beyond general advice by looking carefully at:
- what is happening before the behaviour
- what the behaviour may be helping the child access, avoid or communicate
- how current responses may be influencing the pattern
- which practical changes and replacement skills are most likely to help
There is no pressure to continue beyond the free tracker. Information about BPMS is available if you decide you need more support.
